HOW TO: Cleaning and Caring for your HGL Bumper Plates

Crumb rubber bumper plates are some of the most durable plates on the market, and our HGL bumpers are no exception. They are built to withstand repeated drops, heavy usage in commercial environments, and can perform on any surface. Like all products, routine cleaning and caring for your bumpers will keep them looking new for years to come!

Something we often hear about our plates is that they come with an oily feel or rubber dust on them. Plates come directly from our factory and due to the environment, they can often come with manufacturing residue on them. We can assure you the plates aren’t flaking or losing rubber. This is just excess dust from the factory. In cases where customers experience this, we recommend wiping them down with warm water, a normal degreaser, and a rag. That residue will go away with ease.

There are several misconceptions about caring for and cleaning bumper plates that do not apply to our plates.

Misconceptions:

  • Do not leave outside
  • UV exposure will crack and discolor the plates
  • Avoid bare concrete
  • Do not soak with water or they will rust

Our HGL URA-MAX bumper plates are extremely resilient and are safe to leave/store outdoors. UV exposure does not impact our crumb rubber plates, but it can cause urethane bumper plates to fade in color, leading to cracking in virgin rubber bumper plates.  Our plates are made with 304 Stainless Steel, and a common misconception is that all stainless types are resistant to rust. Grades under food grade ($$$) stainless steel are susceptible to some rust under prolonged exposure to moisture/water. We recommend drying them with a towel if they get wet. If they do rust after extended water exposure, you can apply oil to a microfiber cloth and gently wipe off any surface-level rust. Please reach out if you have any other questions about caring for or cleaning your HGL Bumper Plates.
